Terminology

This is my attempt to provide a comprehensive list of Impulse and other generic Paintball terms.

A

AHF - Angled High Flow.  This is the 15* version of the High Flow Vertical (HFV) solenoid optimizer from New DeSignz for the Impulse.

AI - Adrenalin Impulse.  The custom Impulse from Adrenalin.  Information can be found at www.buypb.com 

ASA - Air Source Adapter.  This is a common connector used to connect CO2 tanks and screw-in HPA systems to a paintball marker. 

B

BPS - Balls Per Second.  Often used to describe how fast you are firing your marker.

C

CI - Cubic Inch.  This is the volume or size of a high pressure tank.  There are four basic sizes for HPA tanks; small, medium, large and extra large.  Generally small is 45 or 47ci, medium is 68ci, large is 88 or 90ci and extra large is 110 or 114ci.

D

DFF - Demonic Full Flow.  The solenoid optimizer from Roughneck Paintball for the Impulse.

Dwell - The Dwell is simply the amount of time that the Impulse valve remains open.

E

ECS - Enhanced Cricket Software.  This is a program that can be loaded in place of the software currently loaded on an Impulse Cricket board.  ESC does not work on an Amber/Green light board.  For more information on the ESC program, go to the Krik-It Software page at https://home.comcast.net/~blackxknight/ecs/

F

FF - Freak Factory.  Referring to the Freak Factory custom Impulse.

FOM - Friend of Many.  While Craig from www.e-paintballoutlet.com will tell you that FOM is for Fat Old Man, those of us in the Impulse world know that he is the Friend of Many Impulse and now Ion owners.

FPS - Feet Per Second.  The speed at which your Paintball is traveling.  This is also called your velocity.

FSDO - First Shot Drop Off. A condition that some Impulses have when the ram/hammer is not lubed correctly.  This is when the first shot has a noticeably lower velocity than all other shots.

HFV - High Flow Vertical.  This is the solenoid optimizer from New DeSignz for the Impulse.

HPA - This term refers to Compressed air tanks sometimes called Nitrogen tanks.

IOG - Impulse Owners Group.  The owners group for the Impulse.  www.impulseownersgroup.com

ISO - Short for Isolation.  The term Isolation Mod is a generic term for the various Impulse add-on modification parts like the Tapeworm, High Flow Vertical and others.

LPR - Low Pressure Reg.  Most guns come stock with LPR's.  This is a reg that lowers the bolt pressure so that the bolt moves at a lower PSI than the pressure pushing the ball out the barrel.  A stock Impulses does not not come with an LPR, but several of the custom Impulses do and there are several upgrades kits that will allow you to add an LPR to any Impulse.

NDZ - An abbreviation often found in online forums for New DeSignz the makers of some of the best Impulse and soon to be Ion upgrades.

O

ORPHAN Impulses - These are custom Impulse Bodies that were manufactured by Smart Parts for a distributor.  For some reason (usually unknown) the distributor no longer wants to sell the custom Impulse any longer so another distributor has purchased the Impulse to sell as their own. 

P

POT - Potentiometer.  This is the small analog adjustment dial that allows you to set various functions on the Impulse.  On the board, only accessible by removing the solenoid tray, is the ROF POT.  Two additional POT's are accessible on the right side of the marker (Jewel side).  The one closes to the back of the marker is to adjust the Dwell and the one closest to the barrel is to adjust the Vision sensitivity.  POT's were found on the old style Impulse boards often called the green light board due to the green light on the back.

PRV - Pressure Relief Valve.  This is an important safety part that protects the solenoid in the event that the operating pressure is set too high on the Max-Flow.  The PRV will vent excess pressure over 225psi.  No Impulse should be without one.

PSI - Pounds per Square Inch.  An amount of pressure.  With an Impulse you often adjust your operating pressure to a specific pressure of 140 - 180 psi.

Q

QEV - Quick Exhaust Valve.  Used in the Ion to replace the banjo fitting that is in the front of the bolt to allow the exhaust gas to be expelled quicker without going back to the solinoid.

RAT - Short for RATpulse.  A series of custom Impulses from www.e-paintballoutlet.com.  Named after their paintball team The Rat Dogs.  So far they have released the Weir Rat (Pewter), Cave Rat (Black) and Bluegrass Rat (Blue) and ROS (Rats on Speed).  These initial batches were followed by the hero series, SuperRAT, SpiderRAT, etc and the low cost but still awesome looking ProjectRATs.

ROF - Rate of Fire.  Accessible on the board the "Semi" POT is used to increase or decrease the Impulses Rate of Fire.  The ability to adjust the ROF only exists on the Amber/Green light Impulse boards.  The ROF is set on the Cricket (blue light) boards and is not adjustable.  For the Ion the ROF is adjustable but the stock electronics are capped at 17bps.

ROS - Rats on Speed.  Another custom impulse in a long line of "RAT's" from www.e-paintballoutlet.com.  These will be high polished silver with clear anodizing, all the normal RAT upgrade and an I-Frame.

WAS - Short for Wicked Air Sportz, maker of the Equalizer board for many markers including the Impulse.
