Adrenalin Impulse

From the Web site:

Adrenalin Impulse:

  • New Style "Cricket" Vision Board
  • Adrenalin Bolt (Black Delrin)
  • Adrenalin Stainless Hammer
  • Delrin Valve
  • Adrenalin GP Slide Check: this is like an extremely fancy tapeworm. It's actually mechanical and moves back and forth to regulate airflow somewhat like a 14-way does. Its an Air Check Valve. It functions the same or better as an LPR setup except it does not lower the operating pressure and functions at about 165psi. For 135 psi setup see LPR option below. It takes up the entire right tube and has a threaded front tube that is colored or chromed and can be changed for different colors (so the milled through name shows up differently). If you choose an LPR option instead, the GP setup wont function along with it and you'll receive an colored or chomed tube/airway instead.
  • Choice of Adrenalin Low Rise or Adrenalin Hi Rise
  • Adrenalin Grip Frame (choice of Single Trigger or Double Trigger setup): this is a 1-piece frame/solenoid tray housing that will fit the new cricket board. We relocated the speaker to decrease the height by 1/2" and we moved the grip forward quite aggressively. There is no milled section for the old style on/off switch or for the rubber cover on the right side. Pictures will explain more when they are out soon. (we redesigned it recently) but its really complicated. It has a built in magnet for the magnetic trigger that is unique from current designs.
  • Adrenalin Impulse Button Pack: Chrome on/off (cricket button) on the back replaces the black plastic one. Chrome vision button on right side of frame, threaded stainless-steel allen key for dwell button to be tournament legal. (overall the frame/solenoid setup the shiznit)
  • Worlds First ever 4th Axis Impulse body. The Adrenalin Impulse body has been custom drilled for unique airflow and connections. The review by IOG or the Impulse FAQ will explain this more but this means some parts wont fit on our body (you have to use an Adrenalin vertical adapter for instance). The Air inlet and the vertical screw has been moved forward to align the gas-through grip with the front of the grip frame rather than setting it back off of it. This allows for room to get your fingers in between it and the trigger frame since we moved the frame forward about 1".
  • Choice of Adrenalin vertical or Adrenalin 15 degree US threaded vertical adapter. (these look really cool). Right now these only work on the adrenalin body (due to unique airflow and connections) but we're coming out with standard versions really soon.
  • Adrenalin Single Trigger (for single frames) or Double Trigger (for double frames) and for double you have either stick or double trigger design. The trigger won't fit into a current impulse right away but we are working on it. The custom trigger setup fits only in our frame as of now.
  • Adrenalin Gas Through Grip molded to fit your hand
  • Adrenalin Rear Block setup
  • Adrenalin Front Cap with bubble sticker covering up an allen screw. Should you choose to upgrade to the LPR setup at any later date, simply remove the adrenalin sticker, remove the allen screw and thread in the Adrenalin LPR and you're good to go (after you take out the GP check-valve and insert the air-tube).
  • Matching (both front AND back) freak barrel with choice of 1 insert (any size you want).
  • Blasted Finish
  • Solid Color anodizing (blue, red, purple, green, black, silver, etc)
  • Color matched soft-gel sticky grips
  • Adrenalin plastic photo ID Card for service and repair tracking as well as theft protection and Adrenalin event admission.
  • Basically the only parts that aren't custom is the ball detent, the solenoid, ram, the cricket board and the sticky grips.
  • Adrenalin customer service and coverage (you want something special we can make it happen for you).

Comments

OK, lets cut to the chase.  You want to know how this marker works and why people are claiming it's the best Impulse on the planet.  Read on and hopefully I will answer all your questions....

I decided to start with Adrenalins list and comment beyond what they have posted.  When done I will throw in anything else that I feel they missed.

New Style "Cricket" Vision Board When first testing the Adrenalin Impulse, Adrenalin made a VERY interesting discovery.  Their Impulse required a lower dwell than the stock Cricket board would allow.  A stock Impulse Cricket board has a Dwell operating range of 4 to 14 milliseconds which is adjustable in .25 millisecond increments.  Essentially this gives you 40 "chirps" or adjustment points.

With the stock board at its lowest setting the Dwell was too high for the Adrenalin Impulse.  So Smart Parts makes a special Cricket board for the AI with a dwell range of 1.5 to 14 milliseconds or an additional 10 "chirps" on the low end.

Adrenalin Bolt (Black Delrin) The Adrenalin Bolt is a standard three-hole Venturi with two holes on the top and one hole on the bottom.  The bolt is milled on the back to reduce weight.  It's overall length is 5 3/16 inches and was specifically designed to sit flush with the back of an Adrenalin Impulse.  On the back of the bolt is an Adrenalin jewel.

It has been my experience that jewels on the back of Impulse bolts don't last long.  The Adrenalin bolt in my AI was no exception.  I believe it was after the third time I used my AI that while cleaning it I noticed that the Jewel was missing never to be found again.  I contacted Adrenalin and they shipped me a couple new jewels.  Go customer service!!!

NOTE: If you are considering an aftermarket bolt for your Impulse, the Adrenalin bolt was the most consistent bolt in Bolt Chrono Test 4.

Adrenalin Stainless Hammer When you lower the weight of the bolt by going from the stock aluminum bolt to a delrin bolt you need to raise the weigh of something inside to maintain a balance to your internals.  Adrenalin accomplishes this with a Stainless Steel Hammer.

Along with the hammer, Adrenalin's RAM is a stainless steel ram that is high polished.  To the eye it looks the same as the Stock Smart Parts RAM, but it's smoother.

Delrin Valve This appears to be a standard Smart Parts Delrin valve and Valve body.
Adrenalin GP Slide Check First what the hell does "GP" stand for??  I have no clue and James will not tell me.

So how does the GP Slide Check work??  That's simple, it allows air to flow in one direction.  When air enters the inside of the GP slide Check, a small ball on the inside is pushed towards the back, which opens it to allow air to flow through the valve to the air passage that feeds the solenoid.  When the pressure on the inside lowers, like when the valve is trying to suck air away from the solenoid, the ball is pulled back and closes the slide check.  It's an ingenious yet simple 1-way valve.

Adrenalin Low Rise or Adrenalin Hi Rise At the time you order, you select if you want an Adrenalin Hi Rise or Low Rise.  The High Rise is really more like a mid-rise and really complements the AI's milling while keeping the overall profile small.  The Low Rise also looks great and makes your AI even smaller.

I have to say since my Angel days I have always been a HUGE fan of the Adrenalin feed tubes.  Unlike other feed tubes, the Adrenalin feed tube fits a 12v revy like a glove.  No need for tape or spacers.  Why can't other companies do this ??

Pictured to the Right is the High-Rise on the top and the Low-Rise on the bottom

Adrenalin Grip Frame Why waste words.  Here is my review of the AI grip frame.
Adrenalin Impulse Button Pack Due to tournament requirements this Button Pack was reduced to a single button, the on/off button on the back of the marker.  The ability to adjust the Dwell via buttons would allow players to adjust their velocity on the field so they were never made.

This Chrome on/off button looks great and gets the job done.

Worlds First ever 4th Axis Impulse body When I first got my AI I took it to my local pro shop.  I will always remember the owners reaction.  He took one look and said "Damn man, that guns milling has milling".  Yeah!!!

The Adrenalin Impulse is by far the most extensively milled Impulse if not marker made to date.

Beyond the obvious external milling there were additional changes to the AI.

  • First the Vertical Adapter (VA) was moved forward about 1/4".  This was done to help balance out the Grip Frame.
  • Additionally, unlike other Impulses where the air from the VA flows through a small hole in the center of the screw that holds the VA in place, the screw on an Adrenalin VA is solid.  There are 4 larger holes surrounding this screw  in the VA that line up with the 4 holes on the body to add extra flow to the valve chamber.
  • Looking down the front of the barrel, the left side of the body was hollowed out to reduce weight even more.
ai_milling.jpg (24045 bytes)
Adrenalin vertical or Adrenalin 15 degree US threaded vertical adapter. As I just mentioned, the Adrenalin Vertical Adapter is custom for an Adrenalin Impulse.  They are available in a standard VA or a 15* VA.  Both vertical adapters have the Adrenalin Logo on the front and have holes on the both sides for gauge if you so desire.
Adrenalin Single Trigger (for single frames) or Double Trigger (for double frames) The Adrenalin Trigger is a custom trigger that will only work in an Adrenalin Frame.  Check out the Adrenalin Frame Review for information on the trigger.

Currently for the double trigger a standard double trigger shoe is offered.  Adrenalin should be releasing their version of a flat or "Blade" style trigger soon.

Adrenalin Gas Through Grip Again, like other parts, this grip was extensively milled to match the look of the marker.

Some people feel that the grip digs in to your hand or has sharp edges.  Personally I wear gloves and have not noticed.

ai_grip.jpg (7113 bytes)
Adrenalin Rear Block setup This is the unique milling on the back of the hammer assembly.
Adrenalin Front Cap Milled to complement the marker, this cap has an Adrenalin Logo Jewel on the front.

The key feature here is "what's under the hood"  If you want to run an LPR on any other Impulse you have to replace the Front Cap with a cap that is tapped and ready for an LPR.  Not the case here.  Just remove the jewel and there is a standard 1/8" plug screw in the front of the cap.  Remove the screw and screw in your LPR.  You will need to get a replacement part from Adrenalin to replace the GP Slide Check.

ai_cap.jpg (6351 bytes)
Matching (both front AND back) freak barrel with choice of 1 insert The matching Freak font/back and one insert has become the standard for most custom Impulses and Adrenalin is no exception.

However, unlike many others, with Adrenalin when you order, you get your choice of freak front length and style at no extra cost.

Blasted Finish The AI comes standard with a bead blasted finish.  This is often called a "Dust" or "Haze" finish.  Optionally you can pay a little extra and get a glossy (polished) finish.
Solid Color anodizing A standard Adrenalin Impulse is available in just about any single color you desire.  If you are willing to pay a little extra you can get just about any anodizing fade, splash or other pattern.
Color matched soft-gel sticky grips These are Adrenalin Logo grips that fit the AI frame PERFECTLY.  Unlike the stock Impulse frame where the little tabs at the top stick out, the AI frame was made for these grips.  With several standard colors to choose from, the Adrenalin logo grips will complement your AI and feel comfortable too. ai_grips.jpg (24301 bytes)
Adrenalin plastic photo ID Card This has been a standard Adrenalin feature for a while now.  You send them a head shot photo of yourself when you send in your registration information and they mail you back a Photo ID registration card.
Adrenalin customer service From my experience Adrenalin's customer service is top in the industry.  These guys know their stuff and know how to take care of their customers.

Things they forgot to mention:

Adrenalin Stainless Steel Screw Set Replaces all the aluminum screws with Stainless Steel Screws.  This includes the grip frame screws, the screws for the grips and several other misc screws used on an Impulse.
Adrenalin bolt pin Milled to complement the Adrenalin Impulse.  Lightweight, strong and stylish.  Anodized aluminum top with a stainless steel bottom. ai_boltpin.jpg (4397 bytes)

So with all that said, the next question I had when I got my Adrenalin Impulse I wanted to know "What parts are compatible with other Impulses", "What parts are not custom parts?" and "What parts are custom or unique to the AI?".

The following list is a list of Adrenalin parts that can be interchanged (purchased for) a standard Impulse.  These parts are all sold at www.buypb.com

  • Adrenalin Ball Detents
  • Adrenalin Front Cap
  • Adrenalin Hi Rise / Low Rise
  • Adrenalin Bolt Pin
  • Adrenalin Bolt
  • Adrenalin Gas Thru Grip  This grip is not 100% the same as the one that comes on a standard Adrenalin Impulse.  Read on to see why.
  • Adrenalin Chrome on/off button
  • Adrenalin Frame  This is actually an AI frame that is made for standard Impulses.  You can not take an AI frame off of an AI and put it on a standard Impulse.
  • Adrenalin GP Valve
  • Adrenalin Hammer and RAM shaft
  • Adrenalin Stainless Steel Screw set

The following parts are identical to those parts found on a standard Impulses.

  • Valve body and Valve
  • Valve Spring.
  • Solenoid
  • The Hammer Assembly except the extra milling on the back.  Does not include the Hammer and RAM.

This list contains the parts custom to the Adrenalin Impulse and will only work with an AI or are only available with an AI.

  • Adrenalin Vertical Adapter
  • Adrenalin Cricket Board.
  • Valve Spring.  This is because the AI Valve Cap is shorter than a standard Valve Cap.  I am not sure if Adrenalin sends a custom spring or just cuts down the standard spring.  When I received my AI it had the standard spring uncut.  This was causing me some issues, but after a quick cut all was better.  It was easier to cut the spring myself than to wait for a new one to be shipped out.

So what are all these changes to air flow that we keep hearing about and why is is that the Adrenalin Impulse can run at a lower dwell than other Impulses?

In a standard impulse you have a screw in your vertical adapter that has a small hole in the center.  This hole applies back pressure to keep your max-flow from "honking".  All Impulses have a flow restrictor.  The key here is WHERE is the flow restrictor located.

With an Adrenalin Impulse, the flow restrictor is in the middle of the Adrenalin gas-thru grip.  You might then ask, "What if I don't have an Adrenalin Gas thru grip, when I purchased my AI I got an inline max-flow?"  Well in that case a small flow restrictor was inserted in to the vertical adapter between the VA and the inline max-flow.  Back on track, because the flow restrictor is in the middle of the gas-thru grip, the top of the gas thru and all the empty space in the vertical adapter now become an extension of the valve cap.  This allowed Adrenalin to make the valve cap smaller without loosing performance.  There is now a larger volume of air "in waiting" to feed the valve once it opens.  It's a very simple yet extremely effective change.

Comments:

I purchased a Premiere Package from Adrenalin.  This consists of the following:

  • Three color fade Adrenalin Impulse
  • Freak set with stainless steel back or matching aluminum back (I opted for aluminum back)
  • Adrenalin Impulse barrel bag
  • Gas thru grip
  • Matching bottom line Max-Flo and 4500 68ci tank.

Beyond the obvious Oooh's and Ahhh's I get at the field.  I love this marker.  It has become my #1 marker over a VERY expensive Ripper LCD with Freak and AIR and my other favorite Adrenalin marker my Adrenalin LED (also with matching Freak and AIR).  I can not say enough how this marker, as I have it, is SUPER light, fast as hell and just amazingly accurate.  Now I know you are going to say, "Come on man, you of all people know that accuracy is paint to barrel match" and I 100% agree that paint to barrel match is very important, but one thing many people forget to take into consideration is the comfort of the marker and YOUR ability to aim with it.  This marker HELP me shoot better.  Now is it the weigh, maybe or the setup, possibly, but whatever it is, it's working for me!!

One question I get asked a lot is "Is it hard to clean when you get shot in the gun?"  I have to be honest.  I don't get shot in the gun a lot, but when I do, it's not any worse than any other marker.  Just grab a towel and wipe it down.  It sometimes takes a wipe or two to get in some of the crevices, but it's never that bad.  Keep in mind that I also have a Ripper LCD and that also has a lot of milling that can hold paint so I am kinda used to it.

The Details

  • COLOR: Anything your heart desires as long as you can pay for it.  Standard Adrenalins come in a single color and with a bead blasted finish.
  • MSRP: See www.buypb.com for pricing and additional options.  There are too many to list here.
  • MANUFACTURER: Adrenalin Products
  • PROs: Light, Fast and uber sexy!!  It's an Adrenalin, need I say more??
  • CONs: A little more expensive that other custom impulses.  However, if you measure the cost for what you get and what it would cost to upgrade to, it's more than worth it.  Due to popularity you will have to order an Adrenalin Impulse and wait for it's arrival.  There are basically none in stock.
