Triggers, Triggers and more Triggers

The purpose of this review is to compare and contrast the differences between the different aftermarket triggers available for the Impulse.   There is no such thing as "which trigger is better?".  Triggers should be selected based on feel, cost and looks.  Preferably in that order.   You should gladly pay more for a trigger that feels better and enhances your performance .  The use of a trigger, and performance from it's use, are directly related to the owners preference.

Triggers 101

Most aftermarket triggers will eliminate (or drastically reduce) side-to-side play by being thicker than the stock trigger.  However the consistency of the cut in the trigger frame can vary from Impulse to Impulse.  You can take the same trigger and in one frame it will be loose (showing signs of side-to-side play) while it will barely fit in another trigger frame (and therefore require you to sand down the sides of the trigger so it fits properly).   There are no setscrews to reduce side-to-side play.

A pre-travel setscrew is used to eliminate the excess travel that occurs BEFORE the trigger engages the micro switch.

A post-travel setscrew is used to eliminate the excess travel that occurs AFTER the trigger engages the micro switch.

The switch actuation set screw is used to set the point at which the trigger engages the micro switch.  Now this can be confusing.  This set screw allows you to adjust the angle of the trigger or how far away from the trigger frame the trigger sits.  A short setting will put the trigger close to the frame while a long setting will put the trigger further out.

Generally when setting up a trigger you will set the switch actuation first, then the pre-travel and lastly the post-travel.

What is the difference between internal and external adjustment points?

  • External adjustments are accessed on the outside of the trigger frame.  After installing the trigger, you fully assemble the Impulse and then adjust the trigger to your liking.
  • Internal adjustments are accessed on the inside of the trigger frame.  This type of adjustment requires you to install the trigger, but not fully assemble the Impulse.  You then have to adjust the trigger and test it before re-assembly.

Which is better internal or external adjustment points?

Let's be real here, how often do you adjust your trigger?   Generally once, that is at the time you set it up.  From there you generally do not have to worry about it.  Obviously there is an advantage to having only external adjustment points on a trigger, but at the same time, triggers with internal adjustment points usually allow more options, in that you can also adjust the switch actuation point, which is only accessible from inside the trigger frame.

What is "Trigger Style"?

The Impulse trigger frames come in 2 flavors.  One, the original, has the trigger spring mounted at an angle off the back of the trigger.   The Newer style has the spring mounted vertically.  Generally if you can see the spring behind the trigger you have the old style frame.

So below when the style says new only it will only fix trigger frames with the vertical tension spring.  If it says old it will only fit trigger frames with the angled tension spring.  There is no such thing as a universal trigger that fits both old and new style trigger frames.  If you have an Impulse with the older style trigger frame you will need to specifically order and old style trigger or else the trigger will not function in your frame.

The triggers are listed in alphabetical order.
